I'd almost be tempted to make it up to resemble something like an RIC carbine as a placeholder, or go all in as a classic sporter, see the Lee Speed.

You would have to lose the flash hider, and the unmodified forestock is worth a fair amount in resale.

I had a couple come past me here that had mods like this, ended up parting them both out like that. The wood on this one would bring enough, the hole in the top could be patched. I wondered why the butt hadn't been changed long ago to something more comfortable to shoot.
    Regards, Jim

Thanks all, recently removed a coat of polyurethane on the furniture and oiled the wood up nice. Gonna keep it like it is for now, maybe trade for something else at some point. Also, will keep an eye out for anything that might solve the sights issue for me.

The rifle is beyond a FTR. Having said that it is in its current shape more than passable truck rifle which could be enhanced with a scope using a side mount so the open sights could still be used.

Agreed. Most things can be got round with spares & a little creativity, but once you start chopping lumps off the rifle body it goes past the point of no (economic) return.......

(That assumes you want to restore it to military trim, of course).
