Were carbine bayonets even around in 1942?
When was the bayonet lug put on the m1 carbine
He also fought on Bougainville where he got wounded leading an operation against a jap machine gun nest
Knowing this is a carbine bayonet he may have picked it up there
Like most vets he never talked about actual combat just some side stories when he was there

That's always been a subject of controversy. There's a video showing a B29 ditching and at vid end there's a carbine with bayonet lug shown. The video is 1945. I'll bet most carbines didn't have them until about time to go to Korea. I don't want to speculate on where it came from but as a past serving member myself, those things can come from anywhere and they go into the pile with everything else. I just doubt it was procured until late war.
