M1 Garand Gas Trap (Updated with photos)

I think I have an original gas trap rifle. Spring and front sight appear to have been replaced but everything else looks original. Rifle was my grandfathers and would never sell it but I am curious as to its authenticity. Any good information out there that I can use to verify it is indeed a gas trap? Thanks.
