In that aspect alone it's a piece of history and indicative of the desperation of the time. Cool! The volley sights had to be a post war addition as they were stripped off when refurbed.
I find it all fascinating. Certainly fun while completing my MA in history! What do you make of the barrel 16' date marking and serial number? A force matched 1916 barrel? Since the barrel serial number might have a different font than the serial number on receiver, as well as a different finish. I also still do not know what was being referred to as potential hebrew lettering. Hmm.

Now...when you shoot it, don't start at 100 yds and try from there. Start at 25 yds and go out. You should have a quarter size hole at 25 yds on the center vertical line if it's correct. Then at 100 four inches in the center line again, probably high...because it's factory zero is 200 or 300...I forget which. Use good ammo and a sandbag rest. Any measures short of this can frustrate ALL work. I know, I've been through it enough. And don't use old WW2 ammo...or worse... Use some PPU/Priv Partizan if you can.
    Regards, Jim

Once assembled they were stamped at the same time in the same font however the barrel was stamped freehand and not in a form like the receiver so they look different. Yours looks like a different font than the receiver though there would be grinding marks where the original number was if it was changed. On my Remington the barrel number is sloppy like yours but it's in the same font as the receiver. Your serial number happens to be 210,000 higher than mine so there could have been changes made in those months. Going back to your first set of pics you can see a double witness mark on the receiver. Just curious, if the barrel was clocked to the unused mark would the sight base be true?

I brought this up waaaaay back there but he challenged that the marks were just...wide... No, there's two. Here's hoping he'll shoot it before we make a book out of this.

I have privi 174 grain ammo for it. I’m sorry I don’t have time to shoot whenever- I’m doing my MA degree and I also teach/work and the nearest place for me to shoot is an hour away. I will shoot it this Sunday hopefully. I will get pictures up of the target as well. As far as the witness marks go- I am obviously no expert so it could be two of them, just up close in person it didn’t look like it. I will approximate how the sight would align if clocked to the other mark. Just seems strange that the barrel would be turned to the other Mark with the sight obviously canted, then have drift the sight blade over to compensate for the cant and stake it in place. Could be a crown issue as previously mentioned. Obviously some of these questions I will never have answers for. Such is history.

Perfect... Don't do ANYTHING unusual. Just align the sights and squeeze...let's see where they fall together. If you do something we'll never know. Act like it's zeroed. Go with that.

It does seem though from initial inspection that the sight would be at least partially less canted if the other mark was used.
