Mossberg 590A1
does anyone know what the history of this shotgun is? I have herd that it was used by the USMC but I though that they had Remington. Any news or info would be great!

I also heard the US military had the Mossberg series of guns. I saw footage of them carried in Gulf War 1. Although I'm sumewhat dated in this, I was in Pendleton in the late 80's and the Marines there were carrying 37 Ithaca's for guard duty. Matt finish iron sights 5 shot so I guess they relegated them for guard only. Little wire seal around the pump and mag tube so no playing. There were 870's for combat. Also saw a mudroller carrying a 17 glock in an ammo pouch for his sidearm.

Only ones I've seen were some Ithaca's, 870's, and a later one the bennelli M4. Never saw any 590a1's.

My son just returned from Iraq while with the 2nd ID...I asked him about current issue "door busters"...There are several varieties of 590s; some with the fancy anti-slip/vented muzzle, some plain, some 8 round, some 5 round, some pistol-gripped, some straight stocked. He carried a pistol-gripped 5 round with standard barrel filled with non-leathal rounds as a second weapon(primary was the M-4). When the last "ballon went up", I was in an Infantry Brigade and we were being issued whatever the DOD could get us from the manufacter; my contacts in G-4 inform me it's still happening in many cases....Sorry it's not a black-and-white issue".

Short answer yes. We have an array of different shotguns that we use in the Corps. I have used both the Mossberg 590A1 as well as the Benneli M4/M1014 Super 90 on deployments. However I know we have other systems in our armories such as the Remington 870 as well as a few test weapons currently and increasingly over the span of the last decade.
The Mossberg 500 and later 590 have been with us since its beginning. It was introduced in '61 and it was fielded in '61; its been with us ever since. I know that the Benelli has been with us since '06, but I couldn't give you a fielding year for the Remi 870.

Welcome to the neighbourhood...I wish you'd stick around and answer a few possibly ham handed questions. That was an old thread but it's nice to have a current update. Much of what we have is out of date, such as myself. I've been out now since 08 so things change. We'll try not to abuse you though.
The 870 cam out in the '50s I believe, and it replaced the '31 Remington in use as far as I know. Remington guns were "All but indestructible" according to what the armourers thought. I don't quite have the same opinion of Mossberg's fine product, but that's because I've seen and broken a few. Maybe you can shed a bit on that too?

The 500 is what we use in the Navy for our VBSS teams (visit board search and seizure) along with short barreled M4's.

Yes, we've seen that. What I was eluding to in that old thread was the breakages seen during use with the Mossberg. Any such info?
