    M1897 Winchester Trench Shotgun Project

I am putting together a 1897 Winchester trench shotgun. I an awaiting the heat shied. It is coming unblued.
So is there an easy way I can blue it or is there someone who can blue it for me? I checked Brownells and they are out of blueing chemicals. Or another source. I do not want to have to buy a tank and lots of chemicals for one or two projects.

    Any guidance would be great

There's a whole long thread about rust bluing here and a few members have done it very successfully. That could be a way to go. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find a gunsmith close to you that can blue it.
    Regards, Jim

I used Brownells cold blue on my M12 trenchgun [in the white] heat shield/mount. But Fords gunsmithing is in Florida. I can’t imagine they couldn’t blue it for you. Your pix isn’t very good but they would probably do your whole ‘97. Good luck on your build.

I would agree and suggest exactly the same. Perhaps a simple glass bead and blue on the gun but a polish and blue so it all matches would be super nice...

Slow rust bluing is much easier than it sounds, and would produce beautiful results...plus the satisfaction of restoring your piece with your own hands. I recommend Mark Lee's express blue if you want it done in a day. Excellent results. You will find reports of difficulty with some of the winchester nickel steel. This can be solved by pre-etching with a correct solution. All you need, and need to know on that, is here https://www.rustblue.com/blog/rust-bluing-woes/. I have used their solutions before with good results, but indistinguishable from the results I have with Mark Lee's express...so now I prefer to blue for a Saturday instead of a week or 2.
