    Did someone carve this stock?

I've seen some odd ones...but not quite like this one.

I don't know about this stock. It has the profile of a type I, II or III but there is no divider forward of the magazine well and is like that of a potbelly M2 stock. Unless that cut has not been made yet??? Strange! It sure looks old and dried out though.

I wonder if it was pulled off the production line when that deep split in the sling well was discovered.

I think it would make a great conversation piece.

Yep. Looks like it was done out of a tree branch too. Looks warped as well. That piece of wood would never have been completed.

It would make a great Planet of the Apes carbine stock then!

I bid $20.00 but was outbid at the last minute. Someone got it for $38.00.

Here's some pix of another carved stock, it came with an S.G. I bought a while back. The only other modifications to the carbine was white paint on the tip of the front sight and red paint on the left side of the safety. I believe the carving was done by the GI who brought this back from the war, his wife used it to hunt with.
Sure would like to find a nice original uncarved stock for it! Maybe someone from central Michigan knows where I can look

That stock is probably not USGI at all. It actually looks like one that the U.S. Historical Society had made for their commemorative carbines, but this one obviously had never been finished.

The first stock appears to be genuine, but is clearly unfinished (where would the op slide go?). It looks like it was a reject that was tossed in the wood pile out back and retrieved after a couple of Michigan winters.

The second stock has been checkered in an effort to make the gun more usable in a hunting context. Unfortunately it is crudely done and, shall we say, less than appealing.
