    M2

Recieved my first Springfield Trainer today, a M2 with a 6-37 dated barrel. S/N is 14.426, reciever is marked Cal. .22 M2. Bolt is marked M2 under NS.

Stock is a cut down straight grip without finger clearance cuts. Shows FJA cartouche, P-Proof, ordnance wheel and something that appears to be the RA-P (raritan arsenal proof). Rifle is missing the Lyman rear sight. As the stock is not being cleared for that sight, I suppose the stock is not original to the rifle? Anyhow, it's got another marking, a small metal disc on the upside of the stock saying "525" (like some inventory number). Front sight is in a tunnel.

Any idea to that rifle, where has it been and were the stocks cut down or did someone else do that?

    Thanks,

    Georg

The stock is from a WW2 1903A3 30 caliber rifle.........and would not have been original to the 1922 M2 rifle. My SRS ( Springfield Research Service) data does not show that serial number. Pictures would help further evaluate your rifle.

Your rifle definitely has a cut-down 1903A3 stock. Does it have some sort of cover on the floorplate that prevents a standard M2/M1922 magazine from being fitted?

Wrong stock, for sure. Finding the correct wood will be a hunt. Good luck.

To Ricks point some pictures of the magazine out of the rifle may be helpful as well.

    Mag floorplate:

The above shown magazine is not original to the rifle and it's even not working properly as it cannot be pushed high enough to feed rounds.

Promo - Looks like you have a good project on your hands, she needed rescued. One thing I noticed, you need a plunger for that mag cut-off!

    More Pic's???

I serously doubt the 03-A3 stock has the correct relief cutout just forward of the magazine well. Suggest to remove the stock and look for that relief cut.
Second ....is your magazine correct??..Must be stamped "M-2" to insure proper & reliable feeding of ammo.

    Mike Haas,

As mentioned in my last post the magazine is not original to the rifle. The previous owner had this rifle for the last 10 years standing around. We got to talk on a show and he mentioned he might got something for me. Well, this is it. It's the second M1903 .22 trainer I came across within Europe, they're nearly impossible to find. So I used my chance and took it, even though it's not complete. I have no experience with the 1922's/M1icon/M2's, will take the stock apart but please note that I've never handled such a rifle before and might not notice everything that is wrong or right.

    Mike D,

You have a great ability of seeing things. You're right, the plunger of the Cut-Off is missing. Was also one of the first things I noticed when handling it.

    Regards,

    Georg
