Look's like some GI might have carved it ?
HD when you get a chance, would you post a pic. of the left side of your M1A1
near the pistol grip and the stock area please, are their any markings at all on the lt. side. Thank's.

Someone on another forum suggested it might a V for victory.
Here is a pic of the left side, no markings that I can see. Is that the area you are talking about? Should there be something there?

Thank's for the pic. a friend of mine has a funny looking mark on his on that side, we decided it was just a ding, looked like a small 'c' and I knew yours was correct.

Humans can spot an elephant in the clouds so our imagination indeed knows no bounds. However it is too neat and clean to be a scratch. I am going with personal ID mark. GI wanted to be able to spot his propped next to the others when time to gear up and move out. It's a personal(ization) thing. There is nothing unique or interesting about a scratch so it can't be that.

IMO, It is a check mark, and I'm sure it meant something to the GI that put it there.
Some folk's have no imagination at all
, they just sit and stare
