    P14 handguard slots????

I have an Eddystone P14 with slots milled in the handguard. They measure 2 1/2 in. long by 1/4 in. wide and are evenly spaced down the center of the handguard. I've seen a couple others with this feature so i don't think it's a bubba job. The only reason for their being i can come up with is to aid in cooling the barrel. Anybody else out there have one or seen one like this?

If the bbl got hot enough to need vented cooling , the heat waves coming out would really screw up your sight picture. Should of had two rows set off to the sides.
