.45 caliber tracer ammo
Just picked up a box of the above mentioned cartridges as I have never seen one before. It is a 1 inch by 5 inch box covered with grease paper and unopened.
Printed on the side is 20 cartridges, TRACER, Caliber 45, Lot FA S-12
Probably WWII (?)

Is there nothing else on the box? No year on the cartridges?

Nothing else on box. Tried to peek inside but sealed with aluminum paper

Haven't seen any in a long time. Used in SMGs as a "near empty magazine" warning from what I've heard. A few other applications, I guess, but that one seems the most practical. If you have any intention of shooting them, be sure to clean as you would corrosive primed ammo.

Used by military pilots to signal their location when they went down, especially at sea. They also issued tracer in .38 Special.
