4T owners and anybody of a nervous disposition, look away now!

I had an email from another forumer last Thursday night telling me that there was an auction the next day and one of the lots was a "Hart"; this is a converted No 4 to 7·62mm with a one piece stock.
He knew along with a "Whittaker" that I wanted a good example of a Geoff Hart converted No 4, and here was one waiting for a good home.

Well I hadn't seen it nor had my mate so I took a punt and and decided what I thought it might go for, the good news came when the auctioneers phoned me back the next day and said I had won it.
    I got it for £100 + 12% commission + £112, a steal if I say so myself.

The good news is that the bore is mint, in fact you can see by the photos all the crud still on there, I doubt if it has left it's gun locker in fifteen years judging by the amount of cobwebs in the foresight tunnel.

    The bad news?
It was at one time a 4T!

    Mick,
Why am I somehow not surprised?? I think I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I went along to Geoff Hart's in about 1992 & he sold me a sack with the last 4 potential 'donor' receivers inside -- all of them 4T's, including a Trials.
I know you probably love your new purchase, but to me it's just one that I was too late to save..........!

As an engineer - and a not very good one at that, I'd say that some of the machine work was, well, er....... 'Wanting' is the sort of word I'm looking for. This is a case where perhaps Enfield got it more right than Mr Hart

Roger, I had an email from a mutual friend (RFD 668 Surrey) who begged the question, "Why use 4T recievers?" I have to say our other mate in Fultons said the same thing, especially when the 4T barrel was not used............odd?

Peter, I actually see it from another perspective; what a versatile peice of kit the No 4 was to be able to hack so much off and still end up with a bloody good target rifle, we do have to remember it was done at a time when there was not such the huge interest in 4T's as there is now.

Now some good news, the "Whittaker" I'm buying which is still in Fultons wasn't a "T".

A lot of rifle for less than £150 - it'll be interesting to see how accurate it is.
Without wishing to take anything away from LE purists its interesting to see how target shooting developed after WW11

    John,

It's all part of my ongoing research into the "transitional" rifles that were converted before the arrival of the Swing and others.
I also bought a P14 the other day, it seems that nobody has much interst in this end of the market at the moment.

Possibly the last unresearched area regarding LE's?
