    Early Pistol Rig

Here's a nice rig I put together. Includes Army S&W 1899 revolver, 1903 RIA waist belt w/ 1872 pattern belt plate, and a 1904 RIA M1896 cartridge box.

Beautiful outfit. I realize the S&W 1899 is not a M-10, but it certainly looks very similar. What is the caliber? Sincerely. BruceV.

The Model 10 designation did not come out until the mid to late 1950's time period. Prior to that it was the Military & Police, commonly called the M&P.
You commonly see S&W pistols advertised as pre model XX, with collector interest starting to grow in the pre model designation pistols.
I have a S&W .44 Magnum that predates the model designation, so is not a Model 29.

The gun is the Smith & Wesson, First Model Military & Police, also called the Model 1899. 20,975 were made, with 1000 going to the Navy (1900) and 1000 to the Army (1901). They were chambered for the then-new .38 S&W Special, and would also accept the .38 service cartridge, aka the .38 Long Colt. The revolver went through a number of changes, mostly internal, and eventually was designated the Model 10, still being made today. The basic frame and feel have never changed.

Ive posted the pistol before. As Jim K says it is one of the 1000 made for the Army for trial against the Colt.
