    Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 T (Retrofit)

    Dear All,

Last year I received a No 32 Mk 1 Telescope from a complete stranger while visiting the range with my Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1. He recognised the rifle and said I have to visit him at his house. I drove through and he showed me the telescope. I told him that this telescope was fitted on the Lee Enfield and he then gave it to me - no strings attached. This happens only once in a life time!!

And so started my project of fitting the scope to the rifle. It took just under 1 year to get all the necessary parts; pads and cheek rest from AAS Sniper in Franceicon, front and rear pad screws, cheek rest screws and swivel from Brian Dickicon (great service!) and sling (Erma Werke) from Classic Arms here in South Africa. A local gunsmith, Vincent Ritchie, fitted the scope following the instructions as per Peter Laidlericon's book. He has done one such fitting before, but that was years ago.

I have fired the rifle after the scope had been fitted and I am amazed at the accuracy and grouping. One thing though, where can a purchase, at a reasonable price, the tool (original or replica) to zero the rifle - it will make life so much easier?

    Here is the final product.

Re scope tool Brian Dickicon first, and then ebay, there's a very clean one right now with one day left for mk1 and mk2 scope-not mk 3, see below, plus they come up regularly.

    Hi RJW,

Thanks for the kind words. I will post some target pics after I've sorted out the adjustment.

(Congrats on winning the cricket match - what a shocker for South Africa!)

For a Mk1 or 2 telescope, don't even bother wasting your money with the 'correct' tool (which one is correct.....) They were all a complete waste of rations. Just leave the lead screw locking nut (the outer nut with forked recesses) nipped up so that the inner lead screw (the reverse headed one) can be turned with a little bit of friction. Now you can simply zero using a suitably sized allen key with a slot cut across the end on the brass lead screw. Then zero it like that......, carefully, carefully a bit at a time and it'll stay put for ever.

Only buy the 'tool' if you want it to look good and to impress your friends in the telescope box - but NEVER use it. And NEVER lock up the lead screw locking nut up over finger tight and NEVER be tempted to use a pair of pliers either.

    Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for the advice. If I understand you correctly the outer nut should not be loose but completely tight when turning the lead screw?

Peter I know that you are the expert on this stuff but I have not only managed to work out a technique for using the tool, I have documented it.

It is the subject that I was going to call you about last year. I will make that call RSN (Real Soon Now) because I believe that I have made a break through and I'd like to run it past you.
