M 1917 at 300 metres

Was today at our military shooting range for 300m shooting. I had my M1917 with ironsight and 180grs. PRVI Partizan ammo. I shot some 5 and 6 shotgroups from prone position and for the first time at 300m with this rifle. For today i am satisfied with the results. The groups are around 10"-11".

Thank you for this post. I have been thinking that I would enjoy a M-1917. From experience I have found the PRVI ammo to be very good. I think you have every right to be very pleased with your rifle. Your pictures are very good. The construction of your range is interesting. I've not previously seen such a arrangement. Sincerely. BruceV.

Hello Bruce,

The construction is an design made by our army. These barricades should prevent that bullets make a nice trip in the village that is near the range. I agree with you that the PRVI is a good ammo there is only one little handicap. It kick`s like a mule becuase its HP ammo but very good.

Recoil can be grim when shooting a military rifle from the prone position with heavy ball ammunition. To help tame the kick of your M-1917, fill the hole under the buttplate with lead birdshot. It will help make the rifle more comfortable to shoot. Also it has been my experience that if one uses a 1907 type USGI sling, it will allow you to have a more stable prone position as well as help you better manage recoil. Thanks Bruce. I´ll try the USGI Sling thats allowed in the rules of our shooting federation. Although i think the version with the birdshot works more effectiv.

You might also try a slip on butt pad. I use one called a "Shooters Friend"

The Shooter's Friend Recoil Pad : Cabela's

They slip on and off and are extremely effective. One problem with most military surplus rifles is that they have a VERY hard steel buttplate.

Indeed. You got right the steelplate isnt very soft. And when you do more than 40 shots it`s getting harder with every single shot.

Those ranges are really good, and always very well maintained. I wish they would build some in England as the danger area on them is tiny compared to the gallery ranges we have here.
I used to shoot regularly on the range at Fassberg air foce base in Northern Germany. I also used the ones at Sennelager.
Sennelager, probably the worst lager in the world!
