My brother -in-law just got a carry pistol in .380. Don't know if he checked out ammo first but anyway he found out there was none to be had. (this is GA) I told him I would send him a box (I have half a dozen) if he would tell me how. So he sent me info on UPS. Can mail it from a UPS store, he says he was told, not true. So I take it into a main shipping point, not too bad, 25 miles round trip. Had to answer all kinds of questions, can't be .50 or above, how many rounds, what caliber, etc. 10.06 ground residential, not bad eh? But wait 5.25 for Service options, which were not options, had to do it. This was for trcking and signaure. .29 fuel surcharge, AND delivery area surcharge 2.65 what ever the hell that is? total 18.25. What a rip off, cost more then I paid for the ammo (years ago at a discount for buying large amount).

Intersesting about the CCW he got. Paid court clerk 20.00 to apply, answered question about the usual history crimal record, mental, etc. Got the license 2 weeks later. Good for 5 years, never took any classes. Here in MI it will cost 250-300 bucks, 100 for the license alone.

... but the trick is to get the recipient to issue a UPS call tag. They will pick the package and you will get a cheaper rate.

Intersesting about the CCW he got. Paid court clerk 20.00 to apply, answered question about the usual history crimal record, mental, etc. Got the license 2 weeks later. Good for 5 years, never took any classes. Here in MI it will cost 250-300 bucks, 100 for the license alone.

Here in WA, it's a $60 initial fee (no class required), good for 5 years, $30 to renew. State law requires that they get it to you within 30 days, but it usually takes about 2 weeks. Renewal's a matter of going to whatever local LE office has jurisdiction over your home address, and paying the fee. A quick record check, and you're out the door with your renewed license.

All in all pretty painless, unlike shipping anything ammo related via UPS.

I went trough this,yesterday,with a box of primers,at UPS.
There is a lot of ignorance amoung UPS employees,concerning 'gun related' items to ship.
I spent about a half hour with a clerk,who phoned three people to acertain that no special wrapping or marking is necessary,but the UPS store cannot ship it.It must be shipped from a wherehouse,and a computer generated label be affixed to it.A receipt is also generated.
Wharehouses are not usually in customer friendly places.

Oh yes, I forgot, box with ammo had to be marked ORN-D with a border around it and "Cartridges, small arms", above that!

Here in Indiana you can get a "Target/Hunting permit" or a ccw for 4yrs(yrs. may have changed lately) or if you want to cough up around $120(?)at one time,you can get a "Life Time" permit that covers everything,Target,Hunting and CCW(you can even sleep with it if you want to)no test required,there will be a backround check,fingerprinting for it and you need to write a reason for wanting the permit,and that requires 2 words,"Self Defense".

Dave, I, too, live in MI and I am totally in favor of the 10 hrs. of required CCW instruction (including 3 hrs. range time). I was shocked at the lack of knowledge of the law and the poor handgun proficiency of some of the students I've witnessed. They desparately needed instruction. What I am not in favor of is some of the restrictions on carry in MI. Anyone visting MI had better familiarize themselves with the CCW restrictions. Rick

New Hampshire CCW,at least in my town,is $10 for a 4 year permit. As far as I know,I don't think there are any requirements on safety classes but then I've been renewing mine,maybe for a new applicant it is different now?
For shipping anything,I absolutely refuse to use UPS anymore for anything. My local UPS sucks bad when it comes to common sense. The counter people,if you can even understand them,know nothing about their policies. I get stuff via UPS but if possible when I have a choice I'll always opt for Fedex or USPS. UPS has damaged more stuff than I can remember. To ship anything,you might as well leave the box open because they are certain to ask you to inspect it,especially if it has anything to do with firearms,parts or ammo related. The last straw was a mint WW2 garand I had sold for a hefty price. Doubled boxed,bubble wrap etc. The SOB would not accept it unless I opened it for inspection,after it took me an hour to carefully box it and tape it. All this while a dozen or so people stand behind you waiting their turn. The line beside me,they made an elderly couple open up a bicycle they had bought to ship to their grandson. It was new in the box in pieces,not assembled. They also had it double boxed and taped up and had to open it for inspection and take off all the tape and packing. I watched this just before I stepped up to the counter with my garand to ship. I told them I was not going to open it and why,they said if I refuse inspection they will not accept it for shipment. I said kisss my a$$,walked out and have never returned except to pick stuff up,and thats a whole seperate experiance in itself. Fedex has never given me these problems,the rates are cheaper,their ground service is much faster,often by days,they are open till 8pm and till 5pm saturdays. With UPS you get a one hour window,weekdays only,to pick stuff up along with dozens of other people. Total chaos usually,and thats if you can even find a spot to park. They are the bottom of the barrel in my area.Pond scum.
Can you tell I'm all worked up just thinking about it? Now I need to sign off and cool down a bit.

Slight correction Ray, 120 if you do not have a present CCW, 100 if you already have one, and you "do not" have to have a reason [at least not where I go], remember that the Hoosier state is a "shall issue" state [at least for now].

In Ohio you must take a CHL course cost depends on instructor usually in the $100-$150 range which is 10 hours instruction and 2 hours range time. $55 for the background check and licence from the Sheriff's Office in your county or an ajoining one which is good for 5 years and then renewal is 5 years. The local people told me next itme I renew I need to take the course again. Ohio is a shall issue state. And it took over a month to get my renewal.
