    m1 carbine rebuild?

Hi i am newbe. Now that I am retired I am going thru my guns to find out any history. I have a m1 carbine that I bought about 30 yrs ago with ser# 49822xx and inland under the rear site. the barrel though is marked underwood and fxel/gardner ma. I take this as being a rebuild at one time. thank you for any info or history you can provide. also who made these parts.

Roc, What you have is a carbine that has been rebuilt and sent overseas and finally was imported back into the country. It was made about Feb.1944 by Inland Div. of GM in Ohio. The barrel was changed during the rebuild and was made by Underwood who also made carbines as well as barrels in Hartford Connecticut. There should be a date on the barrel. If dated before April 1944 then it was for normal carbine production. If dated after that it was made as a replacement barrel. All of the parts in a carbine are maked with who the part was made for except the pins and springs. hth

Exel is the name of the company that Imported the carbine.

99.99% of all carbines went through an arsenal rebuild after W.W .II. All the 'upgrades' added during the war were installed. (Sights, etc) The weapons techs did not and still do not care who made the parts. They just put on whatever part was needed.
Any carbine advertised as being 'all original' or 'all correct' was very likely made that way by somebody with lots of time and money. None of the major carbine makers made all the parts used in their rifles either. Parts were made in over 1600 small shops all over the Eastern US.

Hey! Ive got a rare Inland from the 1/10th% that were correctly made ..err ..ah, I mean has the same parts it had when it left the factory.. all Inland coded parts .. Too bad it's a severely pitted (exterior/interior) low condition carbine! Read shooter/beater! But it does say it is one that hasn't gone through the "correcting" fad and been corrected.
