I was there on Thursday looking at the rifles and shotguns they had for sale. I noticed a sign there stating they no longer sold rifles to NC residents. I enquired if I could buy one as a WVa resident and was told a flat no. They had no answer as to why not only that the policy came from upper management. Still the sign stated VA and SC residents could buy rifles. What gives with them?

Also I found their prices way out of line on guns and powder. They had 1 pound cans on Varget for 27.99 and you can get it at regular gun stores for 27.00 or at Walmart for 25.00. Other items were out of line too.

I guess the days of BPS being a bargin are long gone.

Buying question........The ATF is cracking down on making sure dealers who sell a longgun to someone out of state follow the law for the state where the person resides. They gave us a book as big as the Chicago phone book and said "look it up". It is VERY time consuming to try that and the legalese requires a lawyer to interpret. Also, in the next breath the agent stated most of what was printed in that book was out of date.

Example....... Here in our store (AL) we decided to only sell to contiguous states, FL, GA, MS. But NOT Tennessee. Why?? Because TN state law requires a seperate background check to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at the time of sale. They charge a fee for it. We don't have access to it and are not going to jump through hoops any higher than the ones ATF has set up!!

Bass Pro Shops..........is NOT a discount store. They are full retail and then some. How else could they pay for all the dead animals they had to use to decorate the store? One opened up near here last year. All our regular customers asked if it hurt our business any. Answer was no, after looking at the prices there, they would come here to buy. BPS is GOOD for business!
We sold every gunsafe in inventory the first week they were open. Safes we had for $1100 were $1500 at BPS.

Something must be amiss in NC regarding BPS. Perhaps they are under similar types of local pressures as Wal-Mart is in some cities? Why else would they continue to sell to certain non-residents?

As far as out-of-state deals are concerned, we have too many goofy laws around here which vary by county and municipality. Some dealers will not even honor a C&R in person from an Illinois resident.
A Maine dealer once showed me a letter of warning from the Maine State Police telling them NOT to deal with residents of Illinois, Massachusetts, or D.C..
I'm assuming BPS counter staff doesn't have access to that kind of information.

I must admit the trip of 3 hours and 20 minutes there was a complete disappointment. The no gun purchase thing sucked, the high prices stunk, plus the idiot gals at checkout failed to put my sunglasses and a catalogue in the bag. At least they didn't charge me for the sunglasses but I wanted them and the riflescope catalogue.

A trip to Cabelas is 4 hours and 20 minutes and will be the destination next time the urge hits for a super hunting and fishing store.
