    Re-build Mark? - P.A.O.D.

I have a Springfield Armory M1903 rifle, in the 1.3 million range (early 1930's) with a re-build mark of "P.A.O.D." stamped into the space between the "Springfield Armory" and the serial number on the receiver ring. These letters are individually and unevenly stamped into the metal. I was wondering if anyone knew what facility these letters represented? What was the time period? The rifle now sports a 1942 barrel and other WW II replacement parts, so I assume that P.A.O.D. was a re-build facility. Thanks for any assistance. Cheers, KarlKW

The Panama Ordnance Depot had a small "A" after the P to distinguish it from the Philippine Ordnance Depot.

    Can you post a picture?

"P.A.O.D" represents the Panama Ordnance Depot. The letters are all caps when stamped into the receiver ring. The Panama Ordnance Depot was active from the 1920's through the 1940's, and perhaps longer.

    Hope this helps.

    P A O D - Additional Information

Gentlemen, Thank you for each of your responses. As I now have the rifle in front of me, I can add that the rifle's complete serial number is 1393082, and the letters "P A O D", all caps, and are hand-stamped into the receiver ring, but without periods (.), which is an error in my original post. The rifle has a modified rear sight base, it is round with no lightening flats milled into the sides, and the barrel is dated 3 42. Are we still in Panama, or have we moved to the Philippines?

For Rick the Semi-Retired Librarian: I can take digital photos, but I can't post them. Perhaps if I send you a picture or two via e-mail, you could post them for me?

    Many thanks to all, KarlKW

By "small" I meant "size", not "lower case".

Nope - still in the wilds of Panama! The PaOD stampings I've seen were all on the stocks, as regular rebuild markings.

If you want to send me a picture or two, I will be happy to post it for you. My email is slatercottage[at]gotsky.com (substitute @ for [at] of course)
