Field Gauge for 30-06

Gentlemen:

I would like to get a field gauge to check headspace on my Springfields and Garands.

How do I do this? I recollect that using a gauge to check headspace on a Mauser requires taking out the firing pin. Are Springfields checked the same way? And what else do I need to do?

Any information or comments would be appreciated.

its not needed, but receomended.
depending on who,s gauge you get, some have a cut for the extractor.
cock on closing rifles should have the firing pin assembly removed when checked.
cock on closing not..but a good habbit to get into.

cock on open, cocking assembly can be left in
cock on close, should be removed.
however.
its a good habbit to remove it, as it would smart having a dry fire on that steel gauge..

I'm not sure what Chuck is describing about "cocking" (no disrespect intended) but the firing pin in a Garand is loose in the bolt with no "Cocking spring" and will not interfere with a "field guage" when used. (I see know that the cocking term would be in reference to the Springfield 03's which I have no experience with)

If you use a field guage without a notch, you must remove the extractor to get a proper reading.

I use Clymer guages which have the notch.

Just keep in mind that the field guage is the "last line of defence" against a dangerous condition. If the bolt almost closes in this guage the barrel or bolt need to be replaced SOON!!!! in my opinion.
