working on pics
Well, the 1917 winchester has been sporterized but still has the original iron sights. Shoots straight as i could ask for
i want to do a kinda sniper setup. found scope mount, trying to pick scope, want bi-pod, and looking for leather cheek piece
the M1
Car is all original looking. May put scout scope on it. Love shooting it. Hate the price of ammo.
1911 was built in the 1930's. Was dads carry gun for a bit. He made the mistake of goldplating the whole damn thing =(
looking to Parkerize it again and get it looking original. Love to take it to the range.

DarKnight,
You should take some photos of your carbine and post them on the carbine forum before you do anything to it. If it is correct its worth a lot as a collector gun. Even if it's been rebuilt it may have a fairly high value as a collector.
If you drill it for a scope mount the value of it will crash. There used to be some mounts that would slip into the original dovetail, but I haven't seen them for a while. Carbines have become so valuable now most people try to keep them as original as possible.

how to turn a 800.00 collector into a 200.00 project???
spend 100.00 having it drilled and taped..then spend another 300.00 on a scope and mount..

well, i wasnt planning on tapping the m1. i had found a rail setup that attaches to the barrel and thought of trying that. But you guys make a good point.
I guess the rifles i have should just be left as is and find something else that comes with or can be modified to have a scope without hurting value.

all joking asside.
as gunsmith that does repair and restorations on these weapons, i see so many nice examples ruined by someone wanting a scope on said rifle, or a pimped out example.
then have customers spend hard earned money paying me to weld the holes, remove the pimp finish, to get the weapon back to its original look.
as good as i am, some things can never be repaired fully.
once you drill a hole, though i can weld it shut, i cant hide the heat, it will always show.
my advise is, to restore the guns you have, and find a nice Remington 700 BDL
attach a nice Redfield 3x9 scope, have it glass bedded, free floated, and youll be able to put them in the same hole all day.
and when you get board with that rifle, you can always get what you have out of it.
youll find shooting an iron sighted military weapon, more fun, with surplus ammo,
and likely make some new friends that like clunky rifles just as much, that will share and hone your new addiction to milsurplus rifles.

you guys are right. i'll leave them as is and get something else for scoping. like the savage bolt actions !
i do have to say the iron sights on my '17 makes it fun to shoot. My father-in-law has an enfield carbine so we like to blast water bottles for fun

He said a scout scope, that would be something like a handguard mount with no permanent mods to affect the value in any way.

Where did you find this Rail, Dan?
well my carbine is actually a Universal. =( so i dont mind changing things so much. but i wont be doing anything other than add-ons anyway
NOW, about the 1917...it LOOKS original mechanically, but it has a sport stock someone put on it. I found a B-Square Scope mount that replaces the rear sight without drilling anything, just uses the oringinal screw holes. Any experiance with these?
Any idea on the Value of the 1917 as is? im working on pics but i do know its in nice condition and shots straight? anyone interested in buying it?
