Commercial Controls

Hello All,
Trying to find more info on the illusive Commercial Controls Carbines.- According to Ruth they were assembled using left over parts & replacement receivers from National Postal Meter. But marked Commercial Controls & numbered with new serials. On the other hand according to Riesch they may have been numbered using NPM's left over numbers from their last block. I seem to lean more towards Reisch. Seeing as U.S.&S. shipped 68 replacement receivers in May 1944. This is a month after NPM's last delivery of carbines in April '44. Wouldn't these 68 receivers be some of the ones used to complete at least part of the few assembled by Commercial Controls & delivered in July '44. If so I believe these would have been marked National Postal Meter / U & serial would be in their last number block. Possibly much higher in number than the reported range of 4325xxx-4385xxx that the previous subcontracted U.S.&.S. receivers where.
Just my opinion - love to see what others have to input in this.

One of the reasons I bring this up is I have seen numbers on NPM/U's - 4373xxx
4389xxx. & on NPM's 4426xxx,4429xxx. All of these seem a bit high to me. But maybe they are just end of production or later used replacement receivers. 4389xxx is one of mine.

I really don't believe that the above picture is legitimate: If NPM DID start marking carbines "Commercial Controls", I definitely think that the stamping would look better than that. Anyone agree?

I will disagree, all the photo's in all my books show the stamping the same as in sleeplessnashadow's photo. The photo isn't as crisp as it could be, but that's same as the one in Riesch's book with ser.no.0162 stamped on it. Maybe someone else could add their thoughts.

Thanks for the picture - But in my opinion it looks suspect - Almost as if made from a crudely carved die. Again just my opinion. I may be wrong." COMMERCIAL" appears taller than "CONTROLS" .The second C looks different than the first. - Both R's seem a little off. & The 5's look as if the tops were engraved. I have also noticed differences in serial stamping on NPM's. For instance 4429xxx has open top 4's. While 4389xxx has closed top 4's. On a side note - Observed 4.4 Mill. serials had '43 dated barrels - while higher U.S.&S. marked receivers (above 4385xxx) had I.B.M. undated barrels.

That is because NPM used the tail end of the 4 million block before they started the beginning of the block.

the one that Rock Island Auction sold 3 yrs ago was ugly also, was import marked to boot, brought 7000 from memory-it was a very early NPM receiver that looked to have been ground off and then restamped Commercial Controls. letter size was not same but belive was just difference in how pressure applied when done

Just Found that same photo on another forum from a few years ago. Seems that it was deemed authentic in 1991 & this is the one Ruth refers to in the book.It was a DCM mixed carbine. I'm sure this same topic has come up plenty of times before. Just still seems strange to me that they would have ground off original markings & remarked them in this manor.

Here's some more photo's of the same Carbine # 0155 Forward Receiver marks look suspect to me also. They don't look like others I have seen.It was said that Ruth never actually examined the Carbine for himself but had good communication with the holder.
