A late 1930s Type C stock. Note the little "notch", but much too small for a lowered M1903A4 bolt.

Could the notch have been made by the bottom of a Lyman 48 slide? Or perhaps its a clearance cut for the same?

    Regards,

I wish there were more pics.
Is the rear of the handguard correct - is there corrected damage?
It would fit my 03 sporter, right?
I'd love to take it, with a vintage stock, to a range where there are a bunch of 03 shooters. "I dunno. My uncle brought it back from Germanyicon. I just recently rediscovered it. But he used to talk about taking out a German sniper/officer in some battle." Just as a little joke, ya know, maybe with a longer yarn, to be revealed at some point. Not to be fraudulent. Just want to be clear about that. Gun not for sale.
Anyhow, is the stock worth $300?

Could the notch be a ding? Hardly shows in the top view.
Could putting my sporter in a mil stock mar the barrel finish? Looks like the forend cap might mess it up a little. Don't want to do that. Don't think anyone here liked the idea, anyway. Just thought it would be an interesting look (Waffenamt Gewehr 249(a) sniper).

I've seen them on other stocks, but I can remember the reason for them. Maybe JB will comment.

    like i said.
stocks notched in that way, were done to clear commercial controls, and other late bolt handles.
any stocks made late, for replacement, will have a notch like that, to clear said bolts.
many scant grip stocks were made this way, as were many A3 stocks.
look at the bottom of a square safety lug bolt, youll see how it sticks out were the bolt handle comes to the inside turn.

Thanks for that clarification, Chuck. I am still learning so it is hard for me to follow the shorthand sometimes. And thanks for everyones' patience.
BTW, Brophy says the Elmer Keith cartouche IS boxed. Ed Klauser is not.
