After having a read of the three articles you've put together, I'm quite glad that I did not proceed with mucking up a nice #4 and a spendy set of pads to try and build a clone.
Instead, I sold off the parts I'd accumulated (including both the pads and the personally selected cheek-rest I picked up at Fulton's) and put those funds towards buying a proper rifle.
I'm pleased with my decision, and have been since the rifle showed up.
However, while I was in Fulton's I was shown by one of the gun-techs there a rifle that he was in the midst of working on.
I just dug through my Bisley 08 photo collection (I was at CENTSAM in 08 and 09) and tracked down the photos I took.
In looking at them, I noted that the front pad area has been machined away (you can see the tooling marks from the mill.)
I'll let you experts chime in on the photos, as there's probably more noteable info there than I can draw out, but, anyhow, here's the photos for comment:
