Am I blind, stupid or both - Chatroom?

Ok, I just realized that there is a chatroom associated with Milsurp? I clicked the link and it went to a chatroom on this site. Is this new or have I just been missing something all my life?????

P.S. I know that chatrooms are generally good for women and moral preverts... ok, I ain't a woman, so where does that leave me?

Well, I'd never tried it until you mentioned it.
I saw nothing at all happening.
Maybe an AOL emulator with no one home?

    Announcement

This particular "live" chat system is a relatively new addition to the site and is based upon third party professionally developed software, which is hosted independently. It's been undergoing custom development/testing for a few months and was designed to replace our old chat software that wasn't very functional.

The "Members Chat Room" is a specialized area of the Milsurps.Com web site that permits members to chat (type) 'live" with each other in real time. It's a pretty simple concept and it's organized into multiple individual chat rooms that appear in alphabetical order, which match the same forum names where members normally do regular posts, plus it has a Main Chat Lobby where members are initially placed when they first arrive in the chat rooms.

At that point, they can "meet and greet" others if the wish, then select with their mouse any other specialized chat room they wish to move to in order to continue chatting, or simply stay and chat in the Main Chat Lobby if they wish. For example, perhaps members of the The Lee Enfield Knowledge Libraryicon Collectors Forum have set up a regularly scheduled event to get together and chat in real time with each other. Once they arrive in the Main Chat Lobby, they would click on the room marked Lee Enfield Room and enter there to meet and chat with other members, who may be in that room chatting already. A few rooms are password protected, such as the Moderators Private Room and Contributing Members ONLY Room, so you'll be prompted for a password if you click on one of those.

The chat system is very feature rich with lots of individually selectable and personal display options for each member, such as font sizes etc. It also includes the ability to set-up "moderated" chat nights with specially hosted events and invited "Guest Speakers" etc. Moderated events can be a lot of fun and it's interesting to meet and chat with many members live, whom we've all only met through their various forums posts. We are currently organizing scheduled events surrounding various topics covering different forums, as well as assembling a list of celebrity speakers to cover interesting topics and help us initiate this new system to the site. The topics for discussion may be very specific, or perhaps more general and just titled ... "An evening with (fill in your favourite speaker request here)". If you'd like to see any members be invited formally to appear as guest speakers, please let us know and we'd be happy to see if they have any interest in doing so.

By the way, there's no need to wait for us to schedule chat events. If anyone wants to put something together on their own, simply make a post in the appropriate forum and indicate the date, time and topic of the chat event they'd like to run. We'll help out and perhaps "sticky" the thread, as well as arrange to activate the special moderation function of the software for the event, to ensure everyone gets fair opportunity for participation. Remember one thing though. Our site has a world wide membership, so if one sets up an event you have to mindful of time zones. A good example would be to select a Saturday evening in Englandicon at 9:00 pm GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), which currently would mean Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm EST for the guys in New York (U.S.) and Sunday morning at 8 am for our Australianicon friends who might live in Sydney. So, that kind of timing works for almost everyone, but remember to consider it during your planning.

Without moderated or pre-defined timed events, the best way to develop an ad-hoc chat discussion is to check the Who is On-line area at the bottom of the main forum home page, or look for the special advisory box that appears at the top left of your screen when you are reading various forums, which only shows up when there is activity in any of the chat rooms. Of course, someone has to be the first into the chat rooms for others to see that anyone else is already there, so if you really want to get a chat session going, then we'd recommend you enter the chat room lobby and simply wait for others to see you're there and to join you. Once you do that and since most modern browsers support multiple windows (called tabs), then just open another tabbed window for the site and continue browsing and reading posts normally until another member arrives in the Main Chat Lobby. Another option is to utilize the special built-in Floating Chat Box that is selectable from the drop down Chat Room link option, available from the "navigation bar" at the top of the forums.

Live chatting is fun and another way of meeting new friends on the site. It's only as good as you want to make it and it does mean you need to try it to do so. For additional help, check out the pics below for a further explanation of some of the things mentioned above.

We hope you enjoy this new addition to Milsurps.Com, which is unique to our site and as far as we know, not available on any other gun set on the Internet.

    Regards,
    Badger

This is the message I get upon trying to enter the chat room:

Malicious Behavior Detected! The page or file you requested contains malicious code.
    Transaction ID is 4B8CC69C062C540E17C0.

(some sort of "Java" logo appears first...)

    ........

I have no idea what that is ...

It's being generated from the chat system service provider's host computer in response to seeing something from your end that it doesn't like ...

They indicate that their client software works through firewalls and there should be no problems with members who operate behind them, but I'll open a trouble ticket with their support group and request a clarification.

    Thanks for the feedback ...

    Regards,
    Badger

Edit: I received a quick response from technical support and I gather this is quite a common message received by end users who are behind a corporate business firewall. There's nothing to worry about and there is no malicious behavior, nor any code virus activity, but rather it's a "false positive". It seems to be a custom message from the client's (your end) company IT filtering system which restricts access to certain applications. It maybe worthwhile checking with your company IT department to see if their code of practice restricts access to applications etc - as this is most likely the issue here.

There was a suggestion that I change the Internet port being used from the current default port to 8080, which is the most common port used to access the internet. The thought is that this may help users behind work firewalls (providing they don't also have in place other restrictions as mentioned). I tried that and it didn't work for me and just froze up my browser. Can you see if there's a specific port number that your IT guys would let you use so we can try that to see if it helps your specific case, as we've had no other reports of problems during the last two months of testing. We're currently using 8007, so perhaps they can add that to your OK to use list.

If you're typing that reply thread, then you have exited.

Just click the exit door at the bottom and that's all you have to do.

The "Who is Chatting" display can take a few minutes to update after
    a member exits.
