Hi Griff, concealed part of receipt shows it was shipped to a friend of mine, a Marine Major at the time, for a unit price of $5.00, and $1.85 shipping. 'Quantity & Description' reads: Rifle, U.S., cal.30, M1917 UNSERVICEABLE.

Is that a San Antonio Arsenal marked stock?

A good friend, Col. Richard Allen, was a boy in the late 30's on a ranch in Southwest Texas that had big, arid pastures. Flights of P-36's and P-40's would frequently land there while on training flights from San Antonio. He said they would offer them ammo out of the guns. One time a pilot asked his dad if he wanted an 03 because they had some for sale back at Kelly or Randolph. When he returned, he had brought a 1917 because the 03's were "out." The price was $5. That rifle was later sporterized and then stolen in the 80's.

I have deer hunted for many years in the same area and we had daily low-level flights of F-4s and later, F-15s, but today we see mostly trainers and C-130's flying NOE.
