Lee Enfiled Enforcer 766

Hi All,

I have Lee Enfield Enforcer SER No. 766 D80 on it has the correct bipod, target sight and front sight. It seems to be a hung trigger, with an Mk1 type of bolt release (like the L42’s). It has a 1974 Cordial Enfield barrel, and has very little rounds up it. I would say around 20 or so, I don’t know a lot about these rifles, as I have been a “nut” on No.4 T and L42A1’s. It has a Pecar Berlin V2 4-10x45 SER NO. 91XXX on the parker hale mounts, its in immaculate condition. Any information that you could provide in regards this rifle and scope or some information would be very much appreciated.

Could you please post photos, including the engraving on the left side of the receiver?

No 766 was the penultimate Enforcer (only 767 Actions were made)

According to the Enfield Sales Ledgers many of the later Enforcer Actions were never assembled / sold.
Pretty much all of the 700' series numbers were not sold (18 rifles in the 700's were sold to Thailand but thats all).

At the end of he contract all of the left over parts were sold to Charnwood Ordnance and another company in the North of England. It apears that these companies asssembled the parts and sold the 'complete Enforcer' as unused.

766 was for sale at Fultons at the end of last year so,I guess your purchase is fairly recent. 'welcome to the addiction within an addiction'.

Number 1 is in the National Firearms Collection at the Royal Armouries - Leeds
The last one (767) has its home with BDL in the USA

Thanks yes it was bought from Fulton’s last year, when I saw it was wrapped in paper saying, “DO NOT USE” with the same label on the barrel as well. I believe it was a Charnwood Ordnance rifle, I will get some pictures soon as its in pieces at the moment, the woodwork is dry and having coats of boiled linseed oil applied.

The barrel has the markings of “FB358” “7.62x51mm 4680bar”, and on the top is“CR1470 D74 G”. The front of the barrel near the foresight has “PATT APPLIN No.15572/73”, with a parker hale matchmaker foresight and an rear sight of PH5E4. In side the beech foreend is the black pen number of 5, and rifle number on the front on the outside (like the L42’s) The handgaurd has the same number 5 in black pen. Bolt and magazine are numbered to the rifle with. Body has engraving

I don’t know how many of these rifles were made, or how many remain. But I have like I did with the No.4 T’s and L42’s, found my self-getting more interested about this rifle and its history. Thank you for the links I will look into them. Am off shooting this weekend so will be next week sometime for the photos.

767 Were manufactured
518 were supplied to UK Police Forces
99 were exported to Thailand, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong & Kuwait
16 Were destroyed during manufacture or during testing
134 were not assembled (apparently) and were (apparently) sold off in 'bits'

It is believed that at least 50%+ of those supplied to the UK Police have been destroyed rather than have them fall into 'civilian' hands.

I have been contacting the various Police Forces around the country under the 'Freedom Of Information Act' requesting information. The vast majority of forces say it is force policy to destroy any Police firearms and that their Enforcers would have been guillotined.

(sold out of service) marking. The S might be considerably 'out of line' with the > < markings.

As MKVII says - it is a fairly recent 'put together'
The handguard and forend would normally be numbered inside (often in pencil) and the numbers should match the rifle.
Enforcer Number 5 was issued to Mid Anglia Police 3rd April 1974. As far as I know No5 is still in existence ( I have the owners name) so where your woodwork came from is anyones guess.

Alan, I'm not sure if I have mentioned this before (too much information floating around my head right now), but I chatted with a UK police armourer a short while ago, and he did say that he had seen police-issued Enforcers with numbers on the inside for the fore-end and hand guard in black marker pen, and the numbers did not necessary match the serial number on the rifle or woodwork. Just another weird snippet of information.

The black numbers tend to be just to match the forend and handguard. They often appear on L39 sets made up by the original contractor for gun smiths.

Most Enforcers I've seen have the rifle number written in pencil inside the top handguard.

Hi,

Just wanted to say a big thanks you to all contributors to this tread, and the information on this exciting rifle. I have had a quick look this morning, before going to work. There is no >S< mark on the action anywhere, (I have seen this on my No.4) but not on the enforcer. I will take some photos tomorrow and post them asap, I will PM Alan de Enfield with the details.

Hi All,

Sorry it’s taken some time for the photos, but here they are. As I said it’s getting some TLC, and being put back together. I have not fired it, but I have been looking for some technical information on the scopes, and there is just nothing about. I will post some more on request but am cleaning up / regressing, and reassembling it at the moment. Hopefully she will look better after. I would be happy to let Alan de Enfield, have some information but can he PM me with what he would like.
