Picked Up A BSA No4 Today

Finally got the variation to my licence (permission to purchase) granted so arranged to pick up the BSA No4, little bit dissapointed as it seems Bubba has had his way and mounted a scope on an otherwise lovely rifle.

Bubba has also made a wooden box and added a Pirates' telescope to the kit and some other weird bits and pieces, including what looks like a castrating tool for a bull, but, it says on it that its an adjusting tool for a No32 scope.

Has a Size 1 bolt head which passes the 0.064" 'Go' gauge but will not close past halfway on a 0.074" 'No-Go' gauge. Hopefully can get it back into Military trim with a bit of careful plugging and filing of the screw holes.

Maybe its a rare variant with the T standing for 'training' ?

Was overhauled at 34th Base Workshops - Catterick August 1968

I did check out the history on this rifle before buying. The (previous to me) owner had it for around 10 years and he says did nothing but shoot it (occasionally), prior to that it was owned by a member of the club where Peter Laidler shoots, apparently Peter inspected it and declared it Kosher at the time (12 - 15 years ago)
If its 'wrong' then I'm not going to argue as my 4T knowledge is miniscule.

I accept that the pad is at a 'bit of a funny angle' but what indicates to you that the screws have been replaced ?
Could they have been replaced and the pad re-fitted during the overhaul at Catterick in '68 ?

The screws look(ed) proud in your first photo, and I see the paint has got knocked off the heads, so perhaps they are a bit proud?

My impression was the screws were always filed flush with the flat the holes go through, and the solder evenly filled the gap under the bottom of the pad.

As long as the bearing surfaces on the rear foot of the bracket bear evenly with those on the pad, I guess you're well and good. I just didn't see how they would if the bracket bearing surfaces are as per usual.

Anyway, as long as it shoots perhaps it doesn't matter?
