    Expecting fierce intial enemy resistance, American Marines scramble from rear of an Amtrac which has just come ashore to join the battle for control of the island, just 325 miles from the Japaneseicon mainland.
    Location: Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands
    Date taken: April 1945



    Multitude of Coast guard manned Navy landing craft disgorging equipment and supplies for the fight to wrest control of the island from the occupying Japanese forces.

    Laid down, 18 April 1944, at the Boston Navy Yard, Boston, MA.
    Launched, 26 May 1944
    Commissioned, USS LST-1000, 14 June 1944, LT. Wesson S. Hertrais, USNR, in command
    During World War II USS LST-1000 was first assigned to the European Theater:
    USS LST-1000 departed New York City to Avonmouth, UKicon, 25 July 1944 as part of convoy HXM 30, to resupply
    troops in Normandy and Mont St. Michel.
    USS LST-1000 returned to the US and arrived at Norfolk 23 October, 1944
    USS LST-1000 departed New York City, 29 November 1944 en route to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater where she participated in
    the following campaign:
    Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Campaign and Dates
    Okinawa Gunto operation
    Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, April 1945
