    Interesting Signalling Mk VI scope

For the spotting scope lovers out there.

Just picked this girl up as it has an unusual leather color for the telescope wrap and it was "cheap" and in excellent condition. As you can notice the covers and spare lens case are the standard color along with the loops stitched onto the scope wrap. I guess Ottaway received some non-standard leather during the dark days of 1940.

Lance, I thought I'd seen one pale example before back when I was lurking the 'bay chasing them and TEL SCT REGT. I just went through my pics file and found this Signallers MkVI, dated 1942. It was way back in '06 and I cant for the life of me remember who the maker was- their symbol is on the tube.... you'd be the bloke to ask...

There's been a question asked about the writing on the tag... I'm afraid the pic is all I have (as I didn't buy it at the time) and it's posted here the same as it was on the-bay. I've had a go at blowing it up but my skills run out after "paint" has done it's best.... If anyone out there likes a challenge, have a go at the pic above or the one I'm posting here and see if anyone can get the info off the pink tag.

I think its V5-OS 71784. Its 'interesting' because these telescopes haven't featured in the VAOS lists since Pontius was a pilot but they did feature as part of the No4T CES for many years, whether by accident of design. It';s another part that we can put a VAOS (Vocabulary oif Army Ordnance Stores catalogue number) to. Incidentally, the V5 referred to telescopes and sights while OS was the optical stores catalogue number.

While the Tele Sct Regt (or 'Telescopes, Capt Pugwash' as they were commonly referred to.....) had a later NATO type part number allocated, in the V5/1005-99-xxx-xxx category, the old GS telescope didn't. I think that I've mentioned it somewhere but you'd occasionally find that the ex RAF Regiment No4T's came with a little RAF 20x telescope that was similar or identical to a commercial B&C BRITTANIC (or Brittania.....) telescope. They were marked with the A-arrow-M logo and a 9Exxxx part number. Just a bit of interest if anyone happened to find one of these in their rifle kit when they opened it.

On the same subject, the disposal instructions for the L42's ststed that the Capt Pugwash telescopes, the chamber cleaning sticks and IWS mounts were to be removed and transferred to the L96 rifle kits. The IWS mounts were diverted and stored with the old IIW sights and never seen again - mores the pity but being a what we calleds V&A (valuable, sensitive and attractive) items, they were destroyed.

Not exactly Lee Enfield, but another bit of rubbish for the memory banks...................
