Timing Problem
I was at the range this AM. One of our members just received a nice 5.4 million SA from the CMP
. Service grade, it looks basically new. However, there is a problem. Upon firing, the ejected case is striking the receiver and almost half of the case mouth is being crushed. Timing is off?? What part/parts do we start swapping out? I said it may have to go back to Anniston, but I really don't know.
Any ideas??? Thanks guys.

Extractor and/or ejector are two areas to clean and inspect straight away. Ejector spring. Op rod spring. Ammo. Op rod. Lubrication. Lack thereof. Gas cyl. Gas port. Binding.
Take your pick. Eliminate variables.
Top of my head? Ammo or lube probs.
But mine rarely give fits, so I'm not any sort of guru!

CMP
is excellent about replacement. If it is cleaned, lubed and using HXP and still has the problem, send it back. If you like it tell them that you want the same rifle back. They will fix no problem.

It's basically normal but it wouldn't hurt to replace the ejector spring. The rifle's design calls for the empty cartridge to hit the op rod upon ejection, so empties take a beating.

I agree with bd1. All mine beat the case mouth. Steve, take a drive to Cal-City and lets do some shooting and we'll compare how each damages the case mouth

Hmm, from those replies, my M1
must have something wrong. My empties pop free clean and unscarred. Good thing since I reload like mad. I may have to leave that "malfunction" alone.
