    Z prefix O3A3

TOday I saw a regular RemO3A3 with letter Z above the ser. number - is it fake Z added by someone trying to make the rifle more valuable?

    Thanks

Nope not fake. Remington screwed up and made 03a3 and a4's with the same serialization so they had to add the Z prefix

It is laid out here if you want to read about it.

So, the prefix Z could be located above the serial number, not only in front of serial number, correct?

    Thanks

Yes. The application of the leading "Z" was standard operating procedure for dealing with duplicate serial numbers. The font used on a4 serial numbers is smaller than that used on A3's so the "Z" appears on the same line as the numerals. With a3's it is located above the leading digit.

    Jim

Nothing formal. i have casually recorded pics of about half a dozen A3's with "Z" but I wouldn't draw any conclusions from the number.
The A4's of course were also produced in a consquetively numbered batch (just under 3000 "Z" rifles) or about 10% of A4 production. I have S/N's on 50 or 60 "Z" series A4's.

    Regards,
    Jim

I looked at Vi Shooter database but it has not been updated for a long time...Maybe Mr. Canfield can chime in?

I would say (if you don't mind me splitting hairs) that they are uncommon, but not rare.
