Type 99 on lay away

I found a first series Nagoya-29267 at my friends gun shop. Unmolested mum and in really neat shape. Not sure if it has a chrome lined barrel.

What caught my eye was the GI owner put, "Saipan. June 25 1944" on the stock with a hard lead pencil!

Also, there are 8 distinct notches on the stock. No Mono pod but it has the protective ears on the attachment and the airplne sights only have one notch instead of two. Will post images when I get the rifle....

Adding to my first post is that I was allowed to check the bolt etc for matching numbers and they did match.

Sounds like a great pick up. The barrel should be chromed as well as the bolt head. Does it have the cleaning rod and dust cover?

No dust cover or cleaning rod. The rods must go to some special place that we have not found yet.

Went to put some more $ on the rifle and I had a second look at it. Found "Sgt Milton G Smith" under some of the grime on the hand guard. Found the same thing on the opposite side also written out in ink.

Googled the name and found a PFC Milton G. Smith KIA. Where and when, I do not know. I suspect that I will have to go to NARA to find out more about SGT Smith who probably left alive rather than PFC Smith. On 25 June 1944, he would have had to be with the 2 Marines or 27th Divison. They were most active during that date in a great battle on the center of the island.
