M1 garand chamber issue???? I need help!!!!

I have a springfeild with the serial number in the 3740000 range. Shot for the first time today and noticed that there was a ring around spent case about 1/4 away from the top. Didn't think much of it until i saw the second and third and so on. Looked down the chamber and there was a ring about 3/4 down the chamber. My question is what cause that or did it have a sleeve at one point for .308 ? Why i thought that was i held a .308 case next to the 30/06 case and where the ring was match the .308 length. Can anyone tell me why its doing that or was it sleeved?

It may have been one that was sleeved. It would be better to just re-barrel and move on. Not that expensive for US citizens to accomplish. Krieger Criterion barrels come to mind.

If the chamber was sleeved for 7,62x51mm than the gas port must have been enlarged too - check with another barrel and use twist drills as a gage

Sometimes a ring on the cartridge case can indicate a headspace issue

Just to add it functions well and shoots good. If any knows if it could have maybe been a navy issue? I heard the navy was the first to go to the .308 in the m1 garands.

If it was an official issue it should be marked as such.

It seems to me it should be marked with 7.62 and US Navy or something similar. The barrel may be marked under the OP handle on the side. Otherwise I would have thought it should be marked on top of the receiver. I know I converted one years ago with the insert and to make it function correctly, I used a chamber ream to slightly alter the chamber. It just changed the taper of the 30 cal to accept the 7.62 shoulder. Then it headspaced perfectly and functioned flawlessly. This is the sort of thing that would result in a slight ring in the area you detail. I never did have to change the gas port.
    Regards, Jim
