During the Battle of the Bulge (Dec 1944), allied soldiers decorated their helmets with lace curtains, after realizing it provided excellent camouflage in the snow.

I seem to remember a story about how the civilians in the villages were to hang white sheets out of their windows so the allies would know they were not hostiles but their white sheets had all be confiscated for snow camouflage.
