Jeep is missing its jerry can in the second pic.

Top pick very interesting unknown story. Appears "dry" Marine is trying to coax/encourage others up onto the beach. I see the LST my late father-in law served on in the second pic. Thanks!

Hey Bob, that is an early "script" Willys or Ford. They did not have the gas can rack on them unless it was done at the depot or unit level. Where the gas can rack would be on the later "standardized" jeep is the name "WILLYS" or "FORD" embossed.

I could have sworn I was looking at the frame with the latches hanging empty on the rear port side - even shoving up the soft top a little. The Jeep we restored had the rack but we only used it when were going camping.

There is indeed some sort of carrier / mount over the left bumpette , does not look to be a can carrier , but something is there.

Chris, I think you may be seeing the embossed WILLYS just above the bumperette. I blew this up and that's all I see.

I think you're right . The light and shadows give a 3-d effect . I saw something standing out over the bumpette , but at 400% , I can make out the rear stoplight and reflector on top of it.
