1916 LSA Sht. LE III

I have had my eye on this one for 3 weeks. Tiny shop in the middle of nowhere. All matching including rear sight.Bore is very good. Mismatched Bayonet and scabbard came with it.

Looks good to me. Has the nose cap been re-finished - Maybe its my eyes but it looks mint from the photos. Bayonet looks like a 1907 rather than 1903 with a P14 grooved handguard on it.

Looks fairly clean to me also. I don't think it has been touched. The seller was not sure of what he had and I also have limited knowledge on the Enfield subject. I traded a family gun Remington 22-250,40 M&P SW and a Cooey 22 for it. Thanks I was wondering about the bayonet. Hope I gained on this one.

The photos aren't very good but I say nice not mint. There are areas of the gun I would want to see better before we start categorising it in the mint class.

Something looks a bit funny with the butt and is that a K in the Sht LE stamp on the butt socket? The pictures are very small on my phone.

It is an LE on the socket, I had to do a double take myself this morning.

I found out what the C stamp in a rectangle means with the help of the LIBRARY here. "stored for use on conversions".

Next question. My thought is now, conversion to what? from an MKIII to the MKIII* ????

Looking at the last pic of the wrist strap there is a gap at the top that may require a small bit of work also have a look at the bedding, draws etc to see how things are.
I have a '16 Lithgow and it is going in to the Dr's for a check up shortly we have to remember they are ol'girls with an unknown past so better get ér checked out before shooting.

As you could do damage to certain aspects of the weapon as well as poor accuracy it is just precautionary and entirely up to you.

I wouldn't worry unduly about the gap between the butt and the butt socket. There SHOULD be a gap, about or just less than the width of a hacksaw blade between the butt and the butt socket. This is to ensure that the butt is tight on the taper and ensures that the recoiling butt socket doesn't chip away a shoulder section of the butt there.

Bayonet is a 1907, but looks like its had a wire brush over it, and the grips are as Kiwi pointed out from a P14 /P17.
