Swedish Mauser tips

Starting to seriously look for a Swedish Mauser to add to my small Mauser collection . Just looking for opinions, advice and any experiences { good or bad } you may have had and what, if anything I need to look out for ? My search for a nice shooter begins

I think it is like buying a car. Look for one that has had "good maintenance" and loved by its owner. My son bought a 96 from bearhunter who posts on here. Paid a premium but it is a premium gun and a great shooter. His has a excellent bore, great wood and you can easily see it was never abused.

I reload for it and it is amazingly accurate and having such a long barrel makes shooting it a pleasure even with my old eyes. Very little recoil and probably the only rifle I never get tired of shooting.

We shoot it at 300 yards most of the time and the gun is capable of hitting a 2ltr pop bottle with every shot providing the shooter is capable. My son having younger eyes has no problem doing it with great consistency. We also shoot clays at 300, harder for me to see but the gun is more than capable of hitting them and we do this on a regular basis.

I have several different loads but one is 37gr of Varget with 120gr Hornady Amax bullets. That load gives around 2490 FPS. I can not say that load will work in any other gun and as always start low and work up to where you get accuracy and no signs of overpressure. When my son bought the rifle "bearhunter" told him it was accurate and he sure was right on that comment.

I also load using 140gr Hornady SP with 44gr of H4831SC it is also very accurate and gives around 2400 FPS. Again may not work in any other rifle.

Look for a very good one and enjoy it, one of the "sweetest" rifles to shoot.

Ok, thanks for the reloading suggestions . I already reload 9 different calibers { soon to be 10 when a nice 6.5 Swede is found }, and have not even started to think in that direction. Everything I have heard about them, is very good. Seem to rang up there in accuracy with the Swiss K31. Two local club shooters use them in Military matches with excellent results .

PS : Yours a original 96, or the shorter barreled 38 version ?

Wondering how the shorter 38 { 24.5" barrel } is for accuracy ?
I have a unissued Mauser M48 Yugo short rifle that is a tack driver and would prefer the shorter gun, but not a must.

Here's a cast load that works well in my 96. SAECO #264 cast WW, 20 gr. 4759, 2.900" COL. I've made brass from 7MM Mauser and 6MM Rem. and they stay in the stripper clips too.

Finally got my Swede Mauser last night . If she shoots half as good as she looks, I'll be a very happy camper !
