I never had the chance to shoot that one but we had an Inglis 8mm converted to take a 7.62 barrel. We used the 8mm mags and it worked flawlessly. I could have shot it in the light role the whole day. Tracers would appear as a red dot on the target as if to show a light where you had hit.

I would tend to agree with you Tankie. The little Mk3 was good with its pop-pop-popping but the gun in 7.62mm would sing all day. I remember in the Far East while they were trying to push the GPMG. It just wasn't a jungle fighting weapon and the Bren/L4 stayed with the Infantry until the end.
When the Minimi was about to fully replace the L86/LSW as the section machine gun, they didn't want to cloud the issue by calling it the 'new' LSW. It was me that suggested that the new gun should be the LMG. Geoff XXXXX was writing up the approved training pamphlet and said that he'd already pencilled in 'LMG' So LMG it was - and still is!

What was involved in getting the 7.62 barrel to work with the 8mm? I don't have a 7.62 barrel, and it's not like the Man lets me shoot my 8mm, but it would be interesting to know.

I see in the second photo the sight is folded backwards, was this normal practice as it doesn't appear correct to me.

Considering that the L4A2/3/4 initially used the Canadian
8mm bolt, barrel interface and headspace shoulders, I would simply try fitting a bog standard British
L4 barrel to your 8MM MkI and test fire it.

I think it was the early L4A1s that had the 8mm bolt, by the time of the L4A2 onwards Enfield were making there own 7.62mm bolts (but the same as the 8mm bolt).

Ah........... it was a MODIFIED 7.92mm bolt though........... Backsight always folded forwards

What we did is exactly as stated. We procured a 7.62 barrel for somewhere and carefully fitted it to the gun. Once it locked up, headspace was checked and worked, and we let sliver. Not much production really. Minor fitting...
