I recently saw an early SMLE which had it's bolt replaced with one from another rifle. As far as I know, standard procedure was to remove the old number completely and then stamp the new one in the linished area. In this case the old number was lined through and the new one stamped beneath it. Does this sound like an official military repair or something else?
