He's ready, but apparently not the two blokes sitting near the tree behind him --- or for that matter, the cameraman who is 'downrange'. So, posed for propaganda effect would be my guess.

The guy at the back cannot be to worried as he has his weapon leaning against the local bush and by the look of everyone and positions I would say they are Custered ! (Surrounded)

Judging by the body and arm position of the guy with the "leaning" rifle, I'd guess he is using his field glasses, thus his rifle handy, if not "in hand".

Is it not interesting that the ARVN soldier's right eye is bandaged up and he is shooting the M1
right handed. It must be tough getting the left eye over the stock to line up the M1 sights.

I remember seeing Hmong mercenaries recruited by the US 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam carrying M-14s. The butt plate was mere inches off the ground anytime one of them slung from his shoulder. I'm sure some of them were shorter than the rifle was long - at least it looked that way.
