Thank you for the comments, the top walnut stock is a early Winchester with the solid buttplate, the second stock is birch which was a gift from a 1st Sgt and the M14
stock was another gift from a friend

Bruce Canfield's notes suggest that they ran short of new M1
blanks and raided their commercial stock so as not to interrupt production. You do find some fancy figure on a few early Winnies. I always wondered why the inspectors didn't reject them, the specs are clear about straight-grained walnut. They were Ordnance employees, not Winchester people.
Real men measure once and cut.
