Yugo Mausers

I am planning on buying a couple of the Yugoicon Mausers in the near future. I hold a 003 c&R. My question is who has the nicest rifles? Also easy to deal with etc. I checked around other areas of the net bu got a lot of mixed answers. Thanks.

From what I have seen Yugo mausers, both 24/47s and M48s are fairly common both online and locally. If you are concerned about condition, an in person inspection is always better. Both models around NC tend to be $200-300 depending on the specific gun and can be heavily cosmolined. They are a good deal for what you get.

It all really depends on what exactly you are looking for. Most of the Yugos I have seen have really nice bores and shoot very well once cleaned.

For condition I have seem M48 Yugos in what looked like new, unissued condition. For history I prefer the Yugo refurbed German K98's. They are usually(not always) scrubbed of the German maker codes on top of the receiver and replaced with a Yugoslavian crest. Side rails are usually marked PREZUDUCE '44. Stocks will be sanded(unfortunately) and refinished nicely. The German produced Yugos I have seen are mostly rebarreled with excellent Yugo produced barrels. They make great shooters.

M1924s can also be found from private sales.

And there are usually some nice 24/52c models for sale.

For a Yugo, I'd probably go to a gun show if possible. They are pretty common and in fact are probably the most common Mauser for sale at the shows. If you see a Mauser on the table, it's probably a 60% chance it's a Yugo. I was just at a show yesterday and that's pretty much how it was. I was looking for a VZ24 and other than a smattering of K98's, a couple of ugly VZ24's, the rest were Yugo models. Big problem there was most of them were pretty rough also. But, there was a guy walking around with one he brought to sell that was in excellent shape. So you never know. At least you can get your hands on it and check the bore first hand.

I concur with what Patrick Ford says on this topic. Have had numerous 24/47's and M48's, all fantastic shooters. Keep in mind that the Yugo's were manufactured using any and all surplus/spare parts left over from the German K98 war machine, and much of the machinery for making them was confiscated (acquired?) by Yugoslavia after the war. Have found very nice Yugo's at gun shows and even at some of the Big Box stores in my area, usually in the $250-295 price range. All have had very nice barrels, usually with either stamped or milled hardware, some even with like-new laminate stocks! Accuracy of the ones I've had is superb (even with my old eyes!).

As far as who has the nicest rifles, that's like asking who has the freshest produce at the market. Do your homework, check the wholesaler websites and be sure to read the comments/feedback from those that have recently bought from them. Most reputable dealers will stand behind their products and will help resolve any issues that may occur. My only caution is to be careful of some of the items for sale on some Internet sites, you don't want to buy someone else's junk....

I have a Yugo "capture" K98. Above the wood all German marks are scrubbed, but under it they are all still very clear and visible. The one thing I'd add to what people have said is to really look at the stocks and the finish. It seems to me a lot of importers like to "clean up" the wood and strip the finish from some parts so they are shiny. Or maybe it is previous owners, but in any case, if you are looking for a more "collectable" one keep that in mind. Otherwise I guess it doesn't matter. I got one with a cleaned up stock, it just looked so nice.
