Date of this pouch?
Can anyone give an approximate date for, or any other info about, this pouch? Said to be for revolver ammo from a colonial unit (Natal Guides) from the Boer War, but I thought it looked somewhat earlier.
Thanks
Rob

Looks like an M1874 McKeever box for 45-70, with a national guard or New York plate on the front. Typically they were embossed with US on the front. They also made variants for the Krag
rifles. The boxes were in use well into the 1900's.

GSimmons, you solved it. Well done. The Natal Guides were a tiny irregular unit in the ABW, and I doubt they'd have their own badges or badged kit.

I was going to say, it's an interesting piece of kit but it doesn't look like it'd fit any of the contemporary British
revolver cartridges - it looks like it's designed for a longer cartridge and my understanding is the various .450/.476/.455 cartridges used by the British back then were quite short, much like a modern .45ACP cartridge.

Sure its not one of your own National Guard units from the break of the century?

thats what it appears to me - it is not for revolver cartridges ,
hard to see in this photo but similar rifle cartridge box midway down the right side of the door and the revolver cartridge box is at the top ,
