Rare .30 Carbine Ammo Sighting in Ft Worth

Stopped by Cabela's in Fort Worth on the way home from the range this morning. To my surprise, they had about 25-30 boxes of Remington .30 Carbine on the shelf. As I naturally knocked down the little old lady in front of me as I was diving toward the shelf, I saw the price - $27.99. hmmmm.... hesitation as I stomped on the old lady's stomach as I stepped back again.... It was $24.99 three weeks ago when I last checked the empty shelf. That must be what Capitalist call "supply and demand" (ok, I am practicing my soon to be government-issued to me Socialist attitude - it needs work). Anyway, a little math later, I realized that I can buy never-fired brass, FMJ bullets, primers and powder and still make it for $21.50 per box of 50. If I use old brass, that price goes down to $11.00 per box of 50. I choose to leave the boxes there in protest of higher prices caused by now-I-want-a-gun-since-I-voted-blue horders and the greedy ammunition manufacturers who are profiting off of this extreme supply and demand situation. (sorry, I just can't seem to get this mad-at-the-world-cause-I'm-really-a-socalist attitude down). Now I just need to get some more primers...

So there it is folks - Cabela's had it in stock as of an hour ago (11:30 Central).

P.S. to the guy who bought all the small rifle primers this morning, I have your finger prints and I am hiring tracking dogs....

Ed, I wish I'd turned this infernal machine on earlier. I'll probably check them in the morning anyway. It's not really that far from here. Price is kinda high but I only need a coupla boxes to try out last year's CMP purchase.

My question.... which of the ranges up there do you use? I'm not a big fan of the larger ranges and have been looking for something smaller and less formal.
Have you found one?

I tried sending you an email, but this site wouldn't connect me.... anyway...

I have made a few trips to Quail Creek range. Its up 35W at exit 74. They have a website. Its an outdoor range with a pistol area and a rifle area. I think its the only range on the North end that you can fire both rifles and reloads. Its not fancy, but I have gone there several times recently while working up some reload data. Anyway, they will let you shot a carbine on both the pistol and rifle sides. They keep a range safety officer out on the range with mandated breaks for targey checks every 15 minutes. It has its ups and downs... you don't have to deal with any nuts that show up, but they also limit you to one shot every 2 seconds (no rapid fire). I think they are open Tuesday thru Sunday. Einstine, I think I will pass on that one... bidding on GB for ammo is so... well... passive. There is nothing like the feeling you get from knocking a little old lady down as you dive for ammo in an over crowded gun store!!! Kinda reminds me of shopping at wally world the day after Thanksgiving.

Is there any range in the metroplex you know of where you can fire FMJ? I usually drive 1 1/2 hours to my buddy's land in east Texas just to shoot my military firearms.

I talked to the guys out there and they have no problem with .30 Carbine FMJ. I have been told on several occasion by them that "that ain't nothing but a pistol cartridge anyway." They have also mentioned that several people shoot carbines out there. Their FMJ concern is based on steel core bullets richoceting off the sloped burms and into the farms beyond. I did not ask them about M-1s and M-1As... I felt lucky just finding a place I could do a work-up on Carbine reload data (and not have to worry about all the "I just bought a gun and I am unsafe with it" people). Yea, we really do need to find someone who owns a dirt pit somewhere around here... got any family or friends in Denton or southlake???

It sounds like you found a good place Ed.
I haven't found anyplace in the Dallas area that allows carbines or any other milsurps regardless of ammo.
(Most people in Ft. Worth are easier to get along with than Dallas though)

I got up to Cabela's this morning. They were about out but I got my coupla boxes. Funny thing was, they were marked at $27.99 but rang up at $25.99.
Still too high for me to bother going back for the last two. I left those for the next guy who goes to the trouble of driving up there.
That's one heck of a markup they've slapped on 'em.
