Marines in Bougainville

A group of Marines getting orders. The M1 Carbine on the Marines back the Stock looks like the I Cut is a bit different than your original M1 Carbine I Cut Stock.

Not surprising Frank. We got tons of surplus carbines here in Canada during the early '70s and there was everything. I cut, two rivet handguard, flat bolt, flip sight, type one front bands, laminated trigger mech...every manufacturer... I know because I had about all of them except IP. Didn't see one of those. There were of course the very odd M2 and many converted to the late features. But the point is, there were thousands untouched by the major mods. Even after 30 years of various wars.

Jim, I was thinking he must have done this himself, but then again I know there's a bunch of ppl here like you that have dealt with Early Firearms and also seen some mods from soldiers. I read a story where a lot of Soldiers did mods on just about everything issued and I mean Firearms and other dangerous devices.

Mods aren't really allowed Frank. If any were done to anything along the line while I was in, the individual was dealt with harshly. We even have laws against it. Don't know what you refer to anyway, it looks normal to me.

He has adopted a leather M1 rifle sling on his carbine. I don't know how he managed to put the oiler in the sling-well. He may have used something like a wooden dowel or steel rod. He still would have had to open it up because of the thickness of the leather.

Good eye on the sling. Like you said, opened up the slingwell to accept the thickness of the leather sling. Surprised that they were using leather slings in Bougainville, especially on a carbine. Kinda wet for that. Cheers, Bruce.

1907 sling would almost weigh what the carbine does.

The I cut could also be marred up from using or trying to get that leather sling on the carbine.
