It wasn't my idea.... The Boss had always wanted one, the problem with most is you need a Hiab to move them an transport them (the phone box not the Boss), they can be stripped and looks straightforward, but would involve a lot of drilling and tapping later, as I doubt many of the screws would come out in one, probably a lot would shear....... maybe soon I'll find out, as I,m tempted to remove the solid cast panel which forms the back and swap it over with the left side glazed panel, this will give it a front door instead of a side door so you walk in facing the phone, need to see how I go with time.... will try one screw and see.
I would of liked to give it the full bead blast and rebuild, but time isn't on my side, but 90% of the original coat and undercoat are intact so I,m cleaning up the bad bits, The door was attached, its the first thing I,ve removed, part of the bottom is rotted, so will cut it out and replace with a bit of teak or similar, the top were the hinge for the door closer needs some new dowels and glue, (most don't know the door was wood with a cast-iron insert for the glazing).
One glazing bar to make, the rest is is just basics, it looks a lot worse than it is, the fiddly bits are the small glass panels as the original glazing bars are cast iron and pinned, lucky only a few are broke the rest all ok, the middle glazing has the new plastic bars and brass pins so not too much work.
If your reading this Peter, the Pillerbox or Postbox is the next thing...... Maybe I should just buy a Post Office !!
Things I do remember of them when I was a kid, they stunk of urine and never worked......
