A few years ago I watched airport security confiscate a "John Wayne" from a guy who had carried it in his pocket since Vietnam. He said it was his lucky charm as he handed it over. He didn’t argue or make a fuss. He just handed it over and I watched his head and shoulders sink as he walked away. It was a sad thing to watch.

His P38 was worn so smooth, I had no doubt he was telling the truth. I have had something in my pocket for a few decades too.

When the flight landed we walked out together and I returned his lucky charm to him.
