Need help identifying carcano

I need help identifying my carcan. Guy i bought it from says its a model 38 but it has the ladder sights that go up to 20 like a 91/24? Can send pics if needed

There are a lot of carcano variations so good photos are a must to identify. Full length, barrel markings, etc. Bayonet lug area also important.

It's not a type 38, that much is for sure. Began life as a 91. Not positive but looks like the barrel was shortened. I do not think it is a TS conversion either, more likely a bubba job.

I checked and its the same length as a 91/38 and a TS? Since some 91s got shortened into 91/24s which meant they still had the longer rear sights and hex reciver shape

What do the markings in the gun mean?

It does look about right for a 91/24.

Roma is the manufacturer, OR-P 9635 is the serial number and confirms it started life as a Model 1891. It was produced in 1918

FP stands for Fonderie Piemontesi and indicates the type steel used, don't ask me to translate.

The little crown over a box is the Savoy crest, MS is an inspectors mark

The messy numbers are probably just identification numbers or inspectors marks.

Thanks for the help! I suspected it was a 91/24. The guy i bought it from swore it was a 38

I'd just doublecheck on the barrel dimensions to ensure it is a 91/24 before doing anything. If it is, you have two options for a stock. Wait 5 years until someone lists a 91/24 stock or get a 91 stock and cut it down yourself. Both were done, new manufacture and recycling of 91 stocks. If going that route, they installed a metal shim at the tip because the barrel thickness is smaller on these than the original 91's. 91 stocks are listed on ebay pretty often. There are several options for barrel bands, I expect they are similar if not identical to the TS bands based on photos. They changed the bands on both types partway through production. The handguard would most likely have to be cut down from a 91, a TS handguard will not work because of the different sizes of rear sights.
