I would feed it better quality than the current surplus. Current surplus is also worse quality than what it was originally fed. 7.62x54r was originally brass cased, later on they moved to steel case primarily because it was used in MGs by that point in time.
If it was me I would reload some 7.62x54r, but next best thing would be a box or two of nice PPU ammo.

If it were me, I too would use a brass case cartridge. That's mostly because I loathe the steel case stuff. I said nothing because so many here worship the steel cases and their cheeeeap value, I didn't think it worth specifying...PPU would likely do fine.

I have some reduced loads I am going to shot through it next time I am at the range.
